Here is a guide to install Ubuntu TV using the Alin Andrei PPA for Ubuntu TV. Please note that Ubuntu TV is still being developed and far from finished. This means that some things work and other things don’t.
To add the PPA and install Ubuntu TV open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/test3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-2d
sudo apt-get install unity-lens-video
To start Ubuntu TV open a terminal window and use the following command:
unity-2d-shell –opengl
To stop Ubuntu TV press Alt+Tab and press Ctrl+C in the terminal window.
For your own videos to show up in the shell you will need to place them in the following folders:
~/Videos/unity/local/featured
~/Videos/unity/local/rented
~/Videos/unity/local/purchased
~/Videos/unity/local/recorded
And for video thumbnails to be generated and displayed copy+paste the following line in your terminal window:
/usr/lib/unity-lens-video/create_tmb.sh ~/Videos/
You know what would be awlsome if I can use boxee “t.v. turner” with this.!
I have no idea how they will integrate watching tv on Ubuntu TV but it would be nice if you could use boxee for it 🙂
