How To: Install Ubuntu Unity Bottom Launcher Via PPA

In an earlier post i wrote about an unofficial Compiz plugin that moves the Unity launcher panel to the bottom of your screen. Paullo, the Unity Bottom Launcher developer fixed most of the bugs and he also made a PPA for an easy installation.


If you installed the Unity bottom launcher manually you first need to remove it. To remove the Unity bottom launcher open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following line:

rm ~/.compiz-1/plugins/libunityshell.so

To install the Unity bottom launcher copy+paste the following lines in a terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:paullo612/unityshell-rotated
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unityshell-rotated libnux-1.0-0 compizconfig-settings-manager

To enable the plugin open your CompizConfig settings manager (press Alt+F2 and type: ccsm) and under Desktop settings disable the Ubuntu Unity Plugin and enable the Ubuntu Unity Pugin Rotated. When enabling the plugin you might get some error messages, select “Resolve conflicts” and for the next two popups (select “Disable Flip Down” and “Disable Run Dialog”).

When the Ubuntu Unity Plugin Rotated is enabled the launcher panel will be moved to the bottom of your screen. If you end up with a screen without a launcher panel you need to restart your system for the new settings to take effect. Tip: don’t close the terminal window, if you need to restart your system just copy+paste the following line in the terminal window:

sudo reboot

It’s an easy way to reboot when missing your (Launcher) panels.

To disable the Ubuntu Unity Plugin Rotated plugin and to enable the Ubuntu Unity Plugin follow these steps:

Open CCSM
Disable Ubuntu Unity Plugin Rotated
Enable Ubuntu Unity Plugin
Restart system

To remove the Ubuntu Unity Plugin Rotated open a Terminal window and copy+paste the following lines:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:paullo612/unityshell-rotated
sudo apt-get remove unityshell-rotated
