Here i s a simple script i made to install XBMC on Ubuntu 11.04. this script will create a file with the right distribution (maverick instead of natty) to install XBMC. When the file is added it will download and install XBMC on your system.
Download the script and make the file executable. To do this open your downloads folder and select the file. Click with your right mouse button on the file and select Properties. Click on the Permissions tab and mark Allow executing file as program. When done click on the close button and open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following line:
./Downloads/install-xbmc-on-ubuntu-11.04.sh
When the script is done close your terminal window and to start XBMC press Alt+F2 and type: xbmc
Thanks a lot, man. Saved me time and research.
The script worked perfect for me.
But I’m having graphical issues in the menus very uncomfortable. I suspect this are the nouveau drivers.
SOLVED
I installed the nvidia drivers instead of nouveau and worked like a charm.
I do not recommend to use nouveau drivers with xbmc.
Thank you for the script.
Thank you Joan for the tip 😉
To install the latest nvidia driver read this article:
Upgrade Nvidia drivers Ubuntu 11.04

You can try clicking on the url in the message:
http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/r/rtmpdump/librtmp0_2.3-2_i386.deb to download the missing file and when downloaded install it. When the file is installed try the script again … Let me know if this fixed the problem…

Yep i downloaded your missing file and uploaded it to the server:
librtmp0_2.3-2_i386.deb
Click on it to download the file …
Awesome stuff tinuz, thanks to you shes all up and running.
XBMC Looks great and the media player is all put together from odds and ends of other computers.
The video has periodic stutter, but Im putting in a HD graphics card in this weekend, so it shall hopefully fix that.
I was running the Live CD, but this is better being able to check Firefox etc if needed on Natty.
Just want to now stop other media players from prompting to play discs when inserted. Im sure Ill figure this out in time.
Thanks again.
You can set or change the default applications. open your control center and click on Preferred Applications. Click on the Multimedia tab and change the mediaplayer. if xbmc is not listed enter: xbmc in the command field and close the preferred applications window. From now on all video files will be opened with xbmc
The Script is down. 404 :-/
Sorry moved the site to a new server but forgot to upload the folder with the script in it. Thanks for the notice and it’s now available for download again.
