AnthonyAMC the creator of VDesk is giving away VDesk (Visual Desktop) for the next 5 days. Get your copy before 9/16 and enjoy!
VDesk is a frontend for xwinwrap which allows you to have a screensaver or video as a desktop wallpaper. Others may refer to this as animated desktop, animated background or video desktop. The use of VDesk depends on zenity, xwinwrap, mplayer and screensavers. I hope that you will find VDesk a suitable frontend for xwinwrap, containing all the features that you would hope to find. We have strived to make VDesk user friendly and highly configurable.
Download VDesk – Visual Desktop
Installation
Go to your Downloads folder and extract the content of the VDesk_1.3.zip file. Then open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following line:
sudo ./Downloads/VDesk_1.3.1/installer
The installer will take care of everything from there.
For a more detailed install/usage guide read the README.txt file that’s included in the VDesk_1.3.zip file.
Hey tinuz, thanks for the bump! I have decided to make VDesk free from now on. I know that the open source community has come to expect free, not only in openness, but also in price so there ya go. If you or any of your readers have comments or feature requests, please be sure to use the comments section on the VDesk page at gnome-look.
Thanks again for the bump!

Hey Anthony, that is very good news. I know that a lot of people like/use your script. At the moment i tested several scripts but they all don’t seem to work or install. I just took a look at GNOME-look and GNOME files website but i couldn’t find a link to your free version. Please send me a link to the free version so i can write a new post about it. Or if you want to maybe you (or i) can upload VDesk to our server… Please let me know when a new download is ready to be promoted.… Read more »
The link is still the same:

Thanks for the offer to host a download, but I would rather that VDesk remain a gnome-look download. I don’t want people to be confused as to where the official version is.
It would be awesome if people started putting up some youtube videos of VDesk in action! I think that might draw some more attention 🙂

Sweet!! will download VDesk and make a video on how to install it 🙂
I seem to have the same problem with VDesk as the other scripts … when closing the last open window the video will come on top of the desktop and because of that the panels disappear underneath the video. Did you notice the “bug” to?
I have not experienced this bug. The only graphic glitch i do experience is that when i use a video (not a screensaver), conky, screenlets, and cairo-dock are in a layer below the xwinwrap layer. I am able to click through the xwinwrap layer and bring those “widgets”above it. Metacity will only handle pseudo-transparent windows. A compositing window manage such as Compiz is required for a more seamless desktop integration.
I think we are talking about the same little glitch here, i use compiz but i don’t use widgets or conky so maybe that’s why i have the problem that xwinwrap layer is on top off my desktop. I can still use Alt+Tab and SuperKey to bring back apps, files and the panels.
I am playing on GNOME 3 and the glitch isn’t there…. Nothing happens when minimzing or closing the last open window. The xwinwrap layer stays underneath the desktop …
Who knew GNOME3 was good for something! 0.o
it was kind of a surprise indeed .. lol
It would be nice if the score at gnome-look was higher. Some people were apparently annoyed that i was charging a dollar. Others saw the value, but the damage was done. Need more people to dl and vote!
I am one of those who don’t like to pay for things like that 🙂 When i did some google searching i was able to find the needed codes and to create my own script that does the same… use a video as a wallpaper. I still am working on a post about VDesk but am very busy at the moment ..
