Banshee is written in C# (using the Mono platform on Linux and OS X), using GNOME technologies (Gtk#, GStreamer, etc), and SQLite. It is free/open source software, released under the MIT/X11 license.
Banshee is a default application on Ubuntu 11.04 and above. Ubuntu has a policy of not updating the version of a shipped application, so the version available in the default repository might be old. Note that Canonical modifies our code to take a 75% cut of our Amazon affiliate revenue. If you use Banshee from the community PPA below, 100% of the affiliate revenue will go to GNOME.
To upgrade Banshee to the latest version open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
To start Banshee press the Superkey and type: banshee
