People who are familiar with downloading from the newsgroups using Spotnet know that the software only runs on Windows. I’ve been looking for a similar program that works on Linux and i found Spotlite. Spotlite is almost the same but it lacks an download option, what it does is this. It will do a search on the newsgroups servers for the software/games/movie/music just like Spotnet does. It will show you a long list of search results and when hoovering over a button a dropdown menu appears with newsgroup servers where you can find the needed nzb file. When you have downloaded and saved the nzb file on you can use SABNZBDplus to download it. Spotlite is a dutch piece of quality software but is very simple to use for everybody. The search result info is all in dutch but i think it won’t be a problem 🙂
Before you can install SABNZBDplus you first need to add the PPA for jcfp to your repository. To add the PPA and install SABDNZBDplus open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jcfp/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sabnzbdplus
To start SABNZBDplus press the SuperKey and type: sabnzbdplus
When SABNZBDplus is started for the first time you need to configure some settings. Just follow the instructions and enter your newsgroup provider account info.
To install Spotlite is very easy, you need to download a debian package and install one file using the terminal window. To install the file copy+paste the following line in your terminal window:
sudo apt-get install libssl0.9.8
To download Spotlite click on the link below:
When downloaded extract the content on your desktop and copy+paste the following line to install Spotlite:
For the 32 bit version:
sudo apt-get install ~/Desktop/spotlite-i386.deb
For the 64 bit version:
sudo apt-get install ~/Desktop/spotlite-amd64.deb
When Spotlite is installed you can close the terminal window. To start Spotlite press the SuperKey and type: spotlite
