How To Install Songbird Nightly Builds On Ubuntu 12.10

Here is a guide to install Songbird for Linux nightly builds on Ubuntu. You don’t have to install Songbird but all there is to do is to download and extract Songbird for Linux to a location you want.

sonbird-yti
You can download Songbird from this page. When the download is finished open the downloaded Songbird_2.3.0a-2452_linux-i686.tar.gz file and extract the content to a location you want. To start Songbird for Linux go to the folder where you extracted Songbird and to start Songbird double click on the songbird-bin file.

To create the launcher i used alacarte, to install alacarte open a terminal window and copy+paste the following lines:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diesch/testing -y
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator alacarte

For some reason alacarte doesn’t seem to work well without the classicmenu indicator that’s the reason why you have to install it. To start the classicmenu indicator click on the Dash Home button and search for: classicmenu

The classicmenu indicator is a gnome 2 like drop down menu that makes it possible to start programs. Once started the icon will appear in the indicator area next to your clock.
