How To Install Subsonic Media Server On Ubuntu 14.10

Subsonic is an easy to use, open source, web-based media server.

Because Subsonic is written in Java you need to have Java installed on your system. I already have Java installed so i skipped the installation part in the video.

Subsonic supports streaming to multiple clients simultaneously, and supports any streamable media (including MP3, AAC, and Ogg). Subsonic also supports on-the-fly media conversion (through the use of plugins) of most popular media formats, including WMA, FLAC, and more. After a 30-day trial period, certain premium features require a $1/month subscription. Visit Subsonic Homepage.

If you already have Java installed on your system you can skip this part. You can install Java by adding the Oracle Java (JDK) 6 / 7 / 8 Installer PPA to your system software sources. To add the PPA and install Java open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+pate the following lines:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java -y

sudo apt update && sudo apt install oracle-java8-installer -y

To install Subsonic you first need to download the debian installer from this page: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/download.jsp. When downloaded open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:

sudo dpkg -i Downloads/subsonic*

sudo /etc/init.d/subsonic start

When Subsonic is running close the terminal window and open your browser. To connect to Subsonic type http://localhost:4040 (if you want to connect to Subsonic from another computer use http://ip.from.computer.running.subsonic:4040) and hit enter. The default administrative username and password is “admin” (without quotes), once logged in follow the last 3 steps on the getting started page.

You can also download an app for android and apple devices to connect to Subsonic…
