Install XBMC On Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat”

Here is a guide to install xbmc on Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” using the PPA for Ubuntu 10.04. XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player.

XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, Windows, and the original Xbox. Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software developers have contributed to XBMC, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.

First you need to install the xbmc ppa and make some changes to it… to do this open a Terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following lines

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa && sudo apt-get update

Now open your Ubuntu Software Center (Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center), click on Edit and select Software Sources. Now click on the Other Software tab and search for the xbmc PPA. Select the PPA and click on the Edit button. Look for Distribution: and replace maverick with lucid. When done click on the Ok button followed now close your Ubuntu Software Center. To install xbmc copy+paste the following lines in your Terminal window:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone

When installed you can find xbmc under Applications -> Audio & Video -> XBMC
