Songbird For Linux And Instructions To Set It As The Default Media Player On Ubuntu 11.10

Here is a guide how to download Songbird for Linux, place a launcher in your installed applications folder so that Songbird will show up in the search results. And how to set Songbird as your default player in your dash menu. Songbird for Linux doesn’t need to be installed, you download and extract it to a location you like. To start Songbird you can click on the songbird file in the extracted folder. When searching for Songbird it will not show up in the results because it isn’t installed and because of that you will not be able to set it as your default player. Normally you can use the system info to change the default applications but for this the application needs to be installed. But i found a fix for both problems and if you want to know how…



Download Songbird for linux and when downloaded extract the content into your Music folder (or any other folder). To add Songbird to your installed applications you need to have alacarte and the classicmenu indicator installed. To install the classicmenu indicator and alacarte (if not installed already) open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the follwoing lines:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:diesch/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator alacarte

When installed you can close the terminal window. And to start the classicmenu indicator press theSuperKey and type: classicmenu. When the indicator is started an icon will appear in the indicator area, if you click on it you will have a menu ala GNOME 2.


Create the launcher with alacarte.

To make a make a launcher for Songbird so that it will show in the search result in your installed application in your Dash menu open alacarte by pressing the SuperKey and type: alacarte. Click on the New Item button and enter a name (Songbird) in the Name field. Click on the Browse button and go to Msuic -> Songbird and select the songbird file. Enter a comment if you like, and to change the icon click on the image of the rocket and open the folders Music -> Songbird and select the songbird-512.png file. When done you can close the Create Launcher window and the alacarte Main Window.

When you press the SuperKey and search for songbird the icon should appear in the search result. To start Songbird all you have to do is to click on the icon.


Setting Songbird as default media player in the dash menu.

Press the SuperKey and search for songbird, select the icon and drag and drop it on to your desktop. Make sure the file on the desktop is named: Songbird.dektop if not select the file, press F2 and the file name to:

Songbird.desktop


To set Songbird as your default player open your Home folder and press Ctrl+H to show the hidden folders and open the following folders .local -> share -> applications. Now cut+paste the Songbird.desktop file from your desktop into the applications folder. Open the mimeapps.list file and search for the lines:

audio/x-vorbis+ogg=banshee.desktop

And change it into:

audio/x-vorbis+ogg=Songbird.desktop

When done you can save and close the file and all open folders. Now press the SuperKey and if all went well Songbird should be shown as your default media player.
