How To Enable The Desktop Cube on Ubuntu 11.10

Here is a guide to enable the desktop cube on Ubuntu 11.10. Before you can enable the cube you need to have the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) and the extra compiz plugin installed. Please not that when making changes your screen will blink and/or go blank.. don’t panic it’s compiz reloading the settings after applying the changes.

To install ccsm and the extra compiz plugin open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following line:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-plugins-extra

When ccsm is installed you can close the terminal window and to start ccsm press SuperKey and to start ccsm type: ccsm

Before you start i recommend you to backup the default compiz settings, to do this click on the Preferences button then click on the Export button. Select a location to save the backup and name the file (compiz-default-settings or any other name will do) and when done click on the Save button.

Here are the plugins you need to enable/disable or change:

General Settings:

Here you need to select the Desktop size tab and change the following settings:

Set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4
Set Vertical Virtual Size to 1
Set Number of Desktops to 4

Desktop:

Disable the Desktop Wall (disable the Ubuntu Unity Plugin when asked)
Enable the Desktop Cube and the Rotate Cube.

Effects:

Enable the 3D Windows
Enable Cube Reflection And Deformation

Now you can enable the Ubuntu Unity Plugin, you probably get an error message telling you that there will be some conflicts and if you want to resolve them or want to ignore them… select ignore and the cube should be working.
