How To Install Spotify And Spotify Lens On Ubuntu 11.10

Here is a guide to install Spotify and the Spotify lens on Ubuntu 11.10. You can install Spotify by adding the Spotify repository and to install the lens you need to add a PPA.


To add Spotify to your repository open your Software Sources by pressing the SuperKey and type: sources. Select the Other Software tab and click on the add button and copy+paste the following line:

deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free

When added scroll through the list until you find the sources for Spotify and disable the source code:

http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free (Source Code)

When the source is disabled you can close the Software Sources window.

To install Spotify open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 4E9CFF4E
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client-qt

When Spotify is installed you can close the terminal window and to start Spotify press the SuperKey and type: spotify

To install the Spotify Scope for the Unity Music lens copy+paste the following lines:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scopes-packagers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-scope-spotify

When the Spotify scope is installed you can close the terminal window and log out and back in again. To use the Spotify lens press the SuperKey and click on music icon. To search for music just enter the name off the artist your looking for and click on the search result to play the song. The song will be played using… Spotify.
