How To Migrate Your Firefox And Thunderbird Profile From Windows To Ubuntu

Here is a guide that will explain how to migrate your Firefox and Thunderbird profile from Windows to Ubuntu. Migrating your Firefox and Thunderbird profles is nothing more than copying your existing profile from Windows to Ubuntu and edit your profiles.ini files.



To copy the Firefox profile follow these steps:

Insert a USB stick or an SD card
Create a firefox and a thunderbird folder
Open Computer
Open C:
Open Users folder
Open yourusername folder
Open Appdata folder
Open Roaming folder
Open Mozilla folder
Open Firefox folder
Open Profiles folder
Copy the folder inside the Profiles folder
Paste the copied folder into the firefox folder on your USB stick/SD card

To copy the Thunderbird profile follow these steps:

Open Computer
Open C:
Open Users folder
Open yourusername folder
Open Appdata folder
Open Roaming folder
Open Thunderbird folder
Open Profiles folder
Copy the folder inside the Profiles folder
Paste the copied folder into the thunderbird folder on your USB stick/SD card

If you can’t see AppData folder that means it is hidden. To show hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer: Organize > Folder and search options > View > Show hidden files, folders and drives.

When the profile folders are copied unmount the USB stick/SD card and to copy the profile folders to your Ubuntu system insert the USB stick/SD card and follow these steps:

For the Firefox profile:

Open the firefox folder on the USB stick/SD card and copy the folder
Open your Home folder
Press Ctrl+H
Open .mozilla folder
Open the Firefox folder
Paste the copied profile folder
Click with the right mouse button on the folder and select Rename
Copy the folder name
Open the profiles.ini file
Select the profile name and paste the copied profile name
Save and close the profiles.ini file

For the Thunderbird profile:

Open the thunderbird folder on the USB stick/SD card and copy the folder
Open your Home folder
Press Ctrl+H
Open .thunderbird folder
Paste the copied profiles folder
Click with the right mouse button on the folder and select Rename
Copy the folder name
Open the profiles.ini file
Select the profile name and paste the copied profile name
Save and close the profiles.ini file

When the profile folders are copied close all open windows and to see if it all works open Firefox and Thunderbird.
