Here are some great looking GNOME shells for GNOME 3. These shells are made by Half-left and to see the gallery with all the shells he made click HERE. You can download a theme you like or you can download the theme pack from HERE. When downloaded extract the content (theme folder) to your desktop.
First you need to install gnome-shell and gnome3-session. To do this open a Terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following line:
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome3-session
When installed you first need to backup your default gnome shell, to do this copy+paste the following line in your Terminal window:
sudo cp -fr /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme.bkp
When the backup is made we can now replace the theme folder for a new shell theme, in your Terminal window type:
sudo rm -r /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/
Now move the new theme folder to the gnome-shell folder:
sudo mv ~/Desktop/theme /usr/share/gnome-shell/
When installed log out and Change Session (at the bottom of GDM login screen after you click on your username) from Ubuntu Desktop Edition to GNOME 3. Fill in your password and log in again.
To change the shell just download a new one or use one from the theme pack and extract the theme folder to your desktop and copy+paste the following lines in your Terminal window:
sudo rm -r /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/
sudo mv ~/Desktop/theme /usr/share/gnome-shell/
Now restart the GNOME Shell by pressing Alt+F2 then type restart. Now the new shell will be used.
Hey looks great but I realy wanna know who is that woman on that wallpaper? So damn hot!
I can only tell you where i found her but i can’t tell her name (it’s a secret) … here is where i met her: http://www.n00bsonubuntu.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/0017-52405-pure3-xga.jpeg
Installed this gnome 3 shell and when I log in to it, it tweaks my laptop. It’s not working. How do I uninstall this?
I also tried it on my laptop but i have problems with the window borders (flickering and transparent)
Change session (Ubuntu Desktop Edition) and type:
sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell gnome3-session
this will remove it.
Or you could just change session and leave it on your laptop.
It’s flickering on my laptop as well. I think I will uninstall this and wait till the official gnome 3 desktop environment is released. Thanks tinuz!
you’re welcome 🙂
hey tinuz…i am running ubuntu 10.10 alongside windows 7..after installing updates recommended by update manager in ubuntu my system went into a not responding mode.i pressed ctrl+alt+delete to shutdown the computer.when i restarted i get a login page after the grub menu..but i cannot write anything(even if i type nothing could be written). So i am unable to login.can u plzz help me
You can try to login to the recovery mode and repair broken packages. Instead of choosing the Ubuntu version you press the arrow down to select the recovery mode. When in recovery mode select repair broken packages. Please let me know if it worked and if not i’ll need to do a google search
system is not booting in recovery mode..i wait for about 10 minutes for the system to boot but nothing happens.. a lot of process continue which i cannot figure out what exactly is all about..
Can you select an older kernel in your grub menu?
old kernel…i didnt get u..?? there are five options in my grub menu
1.ubuntu
2.ubuntu recovery mode
3.memory test(+86)
4.memory test (serial console).
5.windows 7
all d names above are not just d same but hold the same meaning of as shown in my grub menu
Boot the pc and when grub is loading press “Esc” then select the kernel and press “e”
you will see a line starting with Kernel something, like this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-10-k7 root=/dev/hdb1 ro quiet splash
after splash add noapic then press b
If that works then you can add it to the grub menu.lst
Do you know what was in the updates or do you get any error reports?
hey i got d issues resolved…my updates were partialy installed bcoz of what i was facing so many problems..i managed to login using the onscreen keyboard..all my internal laptop input devices were not working..den i configured d partially installed updates…thnx anyway…u have always been of great help..tc
Glad 2 hear ur system is up again 🙂
