VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework, that plays most multimedias files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.
First go to Applications and select Ubuntu Software Center
Search for vlc and double click the result for more info and to install extra plugins
Mark the add-on you you want to install and click the Install button
Fill in your password and click on the Authenticate button
Wait while VLC is being installed
When VLC is installed close your Ubuntu Software Center
When installed you will find VLC under Applications -> Sound & Video -> VLC media player
