The Auteur Non-Linear Editor is a professional-grade but user-friendly video editor for Gnu, Linux, BSD, and other Unix and Unix-like systems. Curently it is still in alpha release, but a few of its features are:

Codec Agnosticism. Built upon the famous MPlayer and Mencoder programs, Auteur doesn’t care what kind of media you or your clients bring to the cutting room. Mpeg4, Windows Media, h.264, Theora, Webm, 3gp — with Auteur, you can edit it no matter what.

Speed. Your video is played in real-time. There’s no waiting for importing and converting just to start cutting.

Stability. Auteur focuses on what’s important to an editor: cutting footage, reliably, rather than attempting fancy effects you won’t use anyway.

Robustness. Your data is saved as XML edit decision lists, with automatic back-ups built in.

Collaboration. Auteur works well with others. Because your workbenches are saved in simple XML, you can send your cut to collaborators across the world for them to use with their copy of the project, or even keep your edits in a git repository.

Workflow. Designed by professional editors, Auteur uses a familiar industry-standard workflow so you can review your source video, create clips of the good takes, and edit quickly and easily.
